Deciding which finger is the engagement ring finger, has always been a question and concern for most people. There are times we post engagement photos or videos, and we have a lot of people saying the groom-to-be didn’t put the ring in the right finger.

Also, we have had a lot of people message us to ask what finger is the engagement finger.

If you are reading this article, then you must also not be too sure which finger is the engagement ring finger in Nigeria. And we say in Nigeria because there is no general answer to the question. It’s based on tradition.

In the UK, they inherited the engagement ring finger tradition from Rome, who inherited it from the Egyptians. And the Egyptians believe that the ring finger should be the fourth finger of the left hand because it is said to have the vena amoris (vein of love).

The vein is believed to go straight the heart, and the ring on it is a way to show that the heart is committed.

However, in Nigeria, the engagement ring finger is the 3rd finger (the longest finger). And this is because culture wants a woman who is engaged to be differentiated from the married one.

When she is married, the engagement ring joins the wedding band on the fourth finger which is the one that is supposedly linked to the heart through a vein.

Of course, like everything, there are traditional ways of doing things; but it doesn’t mean couples can’t decide where they want their ring.

All that matters is that you get an appropriate ring size that can stay on both the 3rd finger and the fourth finger.

Note: When counting your fingers, count from the thumb.
