Ask Sugar: My Best Friend and I Are In Love

Dear Sugar,

I’ve been best friends with this girl for more than a decade and we finally decided to talk about how we feel. It turns out she’s as much in love with me as I am with her.

Even though I really want a relationship with her, she has refused because she’s of the opinion that it will ruin our friendship if it doesn’t work out and she would rather not date me than ruin the friendship

I’m at a crossroads about this. I really don’t see myself being with anybody other than her.

Dear X,

It's a beautiful step that you have both taken; to tell each other the truth about how you feel. You shouldn't take her reason for holding off as unfair or cowardly. If you understand how painful heartbreaks and most importantly losing someone is, you'd see that her reasons are quite realistic.

Even though it will be a good idea to convince her, pause on insisting, if you have already tried persuading her. Remember that the decision should solely be hers. This way, you can be certain that she's as committed in the relationship rather than feeling obliged to do it. It's a sign that she wants you in her life, just as much as you want her in your life. Give it some time and if nothing happens, don't beat yourself to it.

Wish you all the best.

Love,

Sugar
