Getting yourself a DJ or MC for your wedding can be a herculean task especially when you do not have a particular choice in mind. You’d have to rely on referrals or suggestions from friends and family.

A DJ or MC is expected to set the mood for your wedding reception and make sure your guests are engaged. Since both can either make or mar your ceremony, there are a lot of things you need to put into consideration before deciding on the DJ or MC.

Here are 6 things you need to do to avoid regrettable mistakes:

#1. No Amateurs

Do not make the error of hiring an upcoming DJ/MC for your wedding as it will only end in tears. You also should fight the temptation of giving the job to a family friend that says that DJ-ing and MC-ing is his or her hobby. It is not a bad thing to encourage people’s hobbies but you only have your big day once so go for the professionals.

#2. Reference Check

Your friends will refer to DJs and MCs they think are quite good at what they do. Rather than just accepting it, go the extra mile by carrying out a reference check. Ask people around what they think about the referred person and his/her portfolio.

#3. Last-minute Hire

Once you see a DJ or MC that connects with your spirit, do not leave the hiring till the last minute. If you do, it will be too late to confirm if you’re in sync with them.

#4. Monotony

Do not get yourself a DJ/MC that does the same kind of songs or jokes at every wedding he/she attends. Their job should be tailored to your style and preferences

#5. Meet and see

Set up a meet and see with the DJ/MC so that you can be aware of every equipment he/she is going to use at the wedding.

Have some sort of rehearsal to have a feel of the songs that the DJ would play at your wedding. The MC is not left out too as you have to be sure he/she is not an embodiment of annoying and unnecessary jokes.

#6. Backup plan

Always have a plan B down to Z. Make sure to have at least 3 DJs or MCs just in case of unforeseen disappointments.

Above all, don’t forget to enjoy your wedding!
