The engagement ceremony is the most recognized part of the Yoruba marriage rites. This is when the bride's family hands over the bride to the Groom's family. The ceremony usually holds at the bride's house. The master of the ceremony is called 'Alaga Ijoko'. She coordinates the whole event.

On the groom's side, the coordinator is referred to as 'Alaga Iduro' , she often helps out the master of the ceremony.

A letter written by the groom's family is usually read out by a young lady from the groom's side asking for the hand of the bride in marriage. Another letter is read by a young girl from the bride's family to  accept the proposal.

The groom is asked to bring some items to be able to take away his bride.
