Married to the Frame

Marriage like I know it is usually goes; boy meets girl, they make a love connection, boy (or girl) pops the question and they both make a conscious decision to spend the rest of their lives together with the commitment of marriage. Things don't go this way for a lot of people though, it has become increasingly common these days to marry in absentia, which sometimes means marrying someone you never physically met or holding the wedding when one party (usually the husband) is not physically present. Typically in these marriages, a framed photo of the absent party (yes you read right) stands in place for the missing groom.

Do you think these are happening because of the so called 'man shortage'?  Or the societal pressure placed on women when they reach a certain age to marry as their biological clock is ticking? Or for the money that comes with marrying a man in diaspora? (That is if there is actually money)….or could it really be love?

Another set questions also follows closely; is this practice possible in developed countries? What is the actual law on these kind of marriages in Nigeria? Is it really worth it?

Now I am no authority on the viability of these marriages but, why not wait until both parties are physically present? For those who have never met physically, this is the commitment to hopefully a life partner, do you really want to take that chance off of phone calls and online interactions?

Let's discuss, what are your thoughts on this? To marry or not to marry?
