Are Single Weddings Becoming a Thing

Have you ever been so tired of being lonely that you decided to marry yourself? Maybe not in this part of the world but in Japan, "solo weddings" have become a complete tourist experience where the bride is clad in a traditional white wedding dress or dressed like a Geisha to live the once in a lifetime experience. In other parts of the world, vows are taken during a self-officiation ceremony along with traditional wedding pictures with a few friends present at a reception. In some cases, the bride has the choice of ending the wedding night with her preferred temporary husband.

The actual process of being in a relationship with yourself is known as Self-marriage or Sologamy which is a commitment to one-self and does not involve a partner as love and compassion to ‘self' are the most euphoric of emotions. Wondering what the rationale is behind this movement? Here are some reasons why ladies are now engaging in Sologamy:

The unforgettable experience

In Japan, some agencies offer a travel package to women which include accommodation, hair styling, makeup and professional pictures without an actual ceremony. In order to have the experience of looking and feeling like a bride, some ladies opt for having a single wedding because they feel a spouse will not come soon. Wedding pictures are great memoirs for those who get self-married in Japan before returning to their lives and responsibilities.

Everyone is lovable

We cannot truly love one another unless we fully express love for ourselves. When this is done, we become more stable in our emotions and expressions. This also means that ladies who engage in this are still open to having relationships with other people which grow stronger as a result of having themselves as a primary partner.

Contribution to a better world

In a world where everyone truly loves themselves, there will be no motivation to cause emotional pain or hurt amongst ourselves. The belief promulgates life to become more sustainable and not exhaustive in the survival of the fittest battle.

A healthy Sologamy recognises the value placed on one's life, self-honesty, body awareness and the need for self-protection as regards personal standards or human rights violation. Sologamy is not a legal process that is recognised by the state since your taxes and name are not altered in the process and it is not pertinent to marry yourself before truly loving yourself.

Can you sincerely only love other people by practising sologamy first in order not to feel an emptiness by being spouseless? Nigerians, what are your thoughts on this?
